June. The Ennstal valley is all green, snow still gleams on the peaks, and the evenings are pleasantly mild. Get on a bike and head in any direction, and you’ll quickly understand why Schladming-Dachstein has become one of Austria’s favourite e-bike destinations in recent years.
The area isn’t just for hikers. Alpine valleys, mountain alms, lakes and panoramic roads are just as rewarding by bike — especially when you don’t have to fight every climb under your own steam.
At Haus Montis, 4 KTM Macina e-bikes are available for guests. In this article we’ll show you which routes are worth exploring, whether you’re visiting the region for the first time or already have experience riding in the Alps.
Why e-bike in the Alps?
On a regular bike, alpine cycling is serious sport. The elevation changes are large, the climbs are long — for a family or a less athletic couple, many beautiful routes are simply not realistic.
The e-bike rewrites that equation.
It’s not about the motor doing the work for you — it’s about a 600-metre climb being a rewarding challenge rather than an insurmountable wall. It’s about reaching the Bachlalm not just as a seasoned cyclist but as yourself. About the kids keeping up, and the day ending with a memory, not exhaustion.
The Schladming-Dachstein region has recognised this: there are 24 Bike & Hike stations in the area, 20 of which can charge a Bosch battery. The infrastructure is in place — all you need is a good e-bike and a plan.

Practical tips for e-biking
Battery and charging
- Always set off with a full charge — the bikes charge at the house overnight.
- The region has 24 Bike & Hike stations, 20 of which can charge a Bosch battery.
- In Eco mode on flat terrain, 100+ km is achievable — this drops significantly on climbs.
- For the Reiteralmsee and Bachlalm Grand Tour routes, it’s worth knowing where the charging points are along the way.
Gear
- A helmet is mandatory — available at the house.
- Comfortable sports clothing, worn in layers — it can be cooler at altitude.
- A windproof jacket is a must if you go above 1,000 m.
- Enough water (at least 1 litre per person) and snacks for longer rides.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses — UV exposure is stronger at altitude.
Weather
- Thunderstorms are common on summer afternoons — an early start is the best strategy.
- Check the forecast before setting off: bergfex.at weather.
- If the sky darkens at midday, the valley is safer than the mountain.
Combine it with the Schladming-Dachstein Card
If you arrive during the card season (14 May – 1 November 2026), you’ll automatically receive the Schladming-Dachstein Card as a guest at Haus Montis. It’s not directly linked to the e-bikes, but it’s a perfect complement to cycling days:
- Regional buses free of charge — you can take your bike on certain services, making one-way rides possible
- Cable cars — if you want to combine an e-bike tour with a hike, the Card includes daily cable car use
- Swimming lakes — after an active morning on the bike, an afternoon at the lake is the perfect finish
Full details about the Schladming-Dachstein Card in our dedicated article.
Who is it for?
Couples
A moderate e-bike ride in the morning — Filzmoos–Bachlalm is perfect — then rest in the afternoon, Schladming in the evening. An active day, not an exhausting one.
Families
Ennstal cycle path and Burgstallerrunde: safe, scenic and manageable. Lunch stop at the KulmiNarium, swimming in the afternoon. Important: children should already be confident cyclists.
More active guests
Reiteralmsee or the Bachlalm Grand Tour — no walk in the park, but accessible enough on an e-bike that you don’t need to be a pro cyclist.

4 KTM Macina e-bikes in various frame sizes. Suitable for couples and children — the smallest frame is recommended from around age 10.
Do you need cycling experience?
The e-bike makes it easier, but basic cycling skills are needed. For easy valley routes, being able to ride a bike is enough. For moderate and hard mountain routes, it helps to have experience with longer distances and climbs.
How far does the battery last?
Range depends on terrain, assist level and load. On flat ground in Eco mode, 100+ km is realistic. Uphill with stronger assist, the typical range is 40–60 km. You can recharge en route at the region’s Bosch charging stations.
Where can I find route suggestions?
The bergfex.at Schladming e-bike page has detailed routes, elevation profiles and maps. Our Routes page features tried and tested routes with GPX files to download.
Can you e-bike with children?
The easy valley routes (Ennstal cycle path, Burgstallerrunde) are great with children — but it’s important that children can already ride confidently and safely. The smallest frame size is recommended from around age 10.
Are the e-bikes connected to the Schladming-Dachstein Card?
Not directly. The e-bikes are an option available at the house; the Card is the region’s official guest card and is provided automatically during your stay. The two complement each other well, but they are separate things.
